Prevent Fleas in Dogs

If you own pets, like a dog, you have possibly experienced pesky fleas or heard awful stories from others who already have. Fleas are nasty little pests that can wreak havoc on a household. Knowing how to prevent fleas and the most effective remedies for your pets if they become pest-ridden are the keys to keeping your pets happy and safe from the aftermaths of a flea infestation. Thankfully, some safe and efficient products could help keep these pests out of your house and help to eradicate them if they are, unfortunately, already there.

Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Cure

Flea prevention is the most cost-effective and easiest way to deal with pests like fleas – the inconvenience and hefty costs of dealing with a flea infestation once it has been already established are worse than preventing the infestation from happening in the first place. As with a lot of things, prevention is cheaper and easier than treatment.

Treatment

Even with the best tips and preventive actions, there are some remote instances where fleas could sneak in and take control of your household. In these situations, it is important to effectively and quickly treat the infestation to save your pets and your household as much discomfort and inconvenience as possible.

A lot of the necessary steps to treat a flea infestation are the same steps you would take to prevent one:

Put your dog on an effective and safe flea medication. Consult with your veterinarian and ask them what medications and supplements they can prescribe.

Bathe and use a flea comb on your pets to remove the adult fleas and flea dirt. Younger fleas feed on flea dirt, so by eliminating it from their environment, you leave them without food.

Your home and the surrounding yard. Vacuum and pre-treat your carpets with Borax. You have to let the Borax powder sit for a couple of hours, then vacuum it up and discard the vacuum bag outside. Make sure to keep everyone—including your pets–off the carpets until you’re sure that you’ve vacuumed up all of the Borax powder.

Leave your pets on a safe and effective flea preventative plan all year round to prevent re-infestation.
